This NBCC-approved training will explore the history of marginalization in this country's mental health field, how that impacts access to care today, and how you can best support BIPOC clients.This training also satisfies the 3 hour cultural competency CE requirement for LCSW licensure renewal & the 1 hour implicit bias CE requirement for LCPC renewals in Illinois.

Training Objectives:

  1. Review how the mental health field has historically excluded and discriminated against people of the global majority
  2. Explore how our identities and role as clinicians, as well as our specific theories and orientations, affect BIPOC communities
  3. Define implicit bias, explore how it shows up in the therapeutic space, and use a case vignette to discuss how to address it
  4. Explore effective strategies that allow clinicians to better conceptualize and treat clients of color

Rebecca Roberts, LCPC, is a Lead Clinical Director, supervisor, and psychotherapist for AMK Counseling in Chicago, IL. Her experience includes helping clients across the lifespan with anxiety, life transitions, trauma, OCD, Body-focused repetitive behaviors, and other stressor-related concerns. Rebecca is trained in Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD and Supportive Parenting for Childhood Anxious Emotions. She also holds a Level II Certification in Trauma treatment. She has led professional workshops on mental health for partners in the Chicago community and serves as a BTTI faculty member for the IOCDF as well as a Task Force Member of the IOCDF DEI Action Council.

Jason Shaw Jr., LCPC, is a Clinical Director and psychotherapist for AMK Counseling in Chicago, IL. Jason has over 5 years of experience working with participants of all ages. His area of specialty includes working with people who experience socio-economic anxiety, generalized anxiety, racial identity exploration, sexual/gender identity exploration, depression, life transitions, and other issues. He utilizes Liberation Psychological Theory as well as CBT, ACT, and ERP to assist participants meet their individual needs.

CE Credits:

This training is eligible for 3 CE Credits.

AMK Counseling has been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7277. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. AMK Counseling is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
